Sale Botanic Gardens
Sale Botanic Gardens, located on the shore of Lake Guthridge, is Gippsland’s principal botanic garden. The removal of the former kangaroo enclosure provided the opportunity for the development of a new botanically rich garden.
The “Garden for Life” explores the way people use and rely on plants. The design of the garden had two aims, expanding the Botanic Gardens’ scientific and educational role through exciting new plantings, and providing informal nature play. The design is comprised of a ring of “plant cell” shaped garden beds and paths, centred around a mounded lawn studded with Ginkgoes and abutted by a curvilinear deck seat and water play area. Planting design explores the ways plants help people and support life through food, fibre, construction, medicine, industrial uses and land reclamation. It also contains an experimental woody meadow bed as a trial site for a new style of landscape plantings. Other projects at Sale Botanic Gardens include assistance with the Care for the Rare beds and the design of the new Climate Match Collection - which showcases plants from similar climates across the globe. |
